MSP urges panel to look after weekly newspapers

THE ANGUS South MSP has paid tribute to the local weekly newspapers in Angus that are in his constituency.

Graeme Dey, has praised the work of the weekly newspapers, which includes the Arbroath Herald and Guide & Gazette in the Scottish Parliament.

Mr Dey was speaking during a debate in the Scottish Parliament which considered the merits of creating a media panel.

The panel would advise the Scottish Government on how to develop a long term strategy for all aspects of media in order to enable stability and growth in the sector.

The local parliamentarian urged the cabinet secretary, Fiona Hyslop, that if a media panel was to be set-up, then its remit should ideally include the interests of the local weekly papers.

The MSP has a total of three local weekly papers in his constituency.

He told the chamber: “I have three local weekly newspapers, the Arbroath Herald, Guide & Gazette and Kirriemuir Herald in my constituency, all of which provide a good quality offering to readers.”

The MSP went on to talk of the trust that people have in their local weekly papers and the important role that the publications play in the communities in which they serve.

Mr Dey also highlighted the willingness of weekly papers with their ability to “give local organisations and good causes a publicity platform that they would otherwise be denied.”
