WELL-KNOWN Angus peripatetic music teacher Mike Robertson and Ailsa Russell, one of his former pupils in Carlogie Primary and Carnoustie High, received awards from the Harry Mortimer Trust at the British Open Brass Band Championships held in the Symphony Hall, Birmingham, on Saturday.

Mr Robertson was presented with The Mortimer Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians which is awarded in recognition of services for teaching young people in the brass movement.”

Ailsa was awarded the 2011 Harry Mortimer Memorial Trust for Brass Student of the Year Award, £500 and a Commemorative Certificate awarded to ‘outstanding young brass musicians to assist in their studies and training’.

Ailsa is going into her third year at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is currently studying under Owen Farr. She is a member of the Cory Band which won the Open Championship contest on Saturday and is currently ranked the number one band in the world.
