The 100 day countdown to the Commonwealth Games 2014 has begun and across Angus communities are preparing local events with the help of new funds.

Convener of the Angus Games Steering Group Jeanette Gaul said: “We can’t wait - in just 100 days we will be welcoming world-class athletes and spectators from across the world. We’re making the final touches to make sure that the visitors have a fantastic experience.”

Angus Council Commonwealth Games Fund opened on Wednesday for groups, individuals and businesses in Carnoustie and Monifieth.

The Celebrate Fund is also available. It is a national fund aimed at encouraging communities to come together to hold arts, heritage, sports and local community celebrations for the 2014 games and to stimulate greater involvement in community activity.

“There is still time for local groups to apply for Celebrate funding if they want to hold an event before or during the games,” continued Mrs Gaul. “In Angus we have managed to receive £300,000 worth of grants so far, for events, which is brilliant and there is more in the pipeline.”

Celebrations can be a single one-off event of activities which end with a celebration event.

A number of Angus groups have already been successful in receiving funding such as the Forfar Dramatic Society who secured £10,000 and the Angus Council Sports Awards in March received £5,000.

Mrs Gaul urges local groups, schools and voluntary organisations to apply: “There is lots of money out there waiting for people to bid on it.”
