There was a real treat in store for this country bumpkin when she had lunch with friends at the stunning Malmaison in Dundee.

The imposing building in the heart of the metamorphosing waterfront was the ideal setting for a catchup, a cocktail and a cornucopia of flavours which were served up.

On arriving up the sweeping staircase we were taken to the bar where a trio of cocktails was ordered which set the mood perfectly.

At first the menu did seem a bit pricey for this local lass who is used to a soup and sandwich deal at under a tenner - but my advice is just go with the flow and enjoy.

I certainly did with my starter of Malmaison classic prawn cocktail served with crisp iceberg lettuce, cocktail sauce and the most delicious pimpernickel bread (£8.50).

The tower of prawns (pictured) was almost a meal in itself and the beauty of it was the delicate flavour of the prawns was not lost as in some cocktails; rather the subtle cocktail sauce complemented the seafood perfectly.

For my main course I chose the double chicken breast served with rocket salad and a lemon and caper dressing (£14). I couldn’t resit the hand cut skin on fries (£4) which finished the dish off perfectly.

The chicken was succulent, perfectly cooked and the sauce was delicious. A small amount had been drizzled over the chicken with the remainder served in a little pot on the side which ensured you could have as much, or as little, as you liked.

My friends were both full of praise for their choices - another classic prawn cocktail and the apple, pear and goat’s cheese salad which not only tasted delicious but was a work of art.

The other mains were the blue cheese burger and the Malclassic steak frites (full face rumpsteak) served with a whisky sauce and again cooked to perfection and specifically as ordered.

This was a lunch which we certainly savoured. We were not rushed, the bar staff were most attentive in helping us choose our drinks (although there was a bit of a delay with the eventual service).

For me my Malmaison experience was one to be remembered and, hopefully, repeated. The surroundings were spectacular and the menu choice most impressive.
