NTS members will hear about the 'Archaeology of Whisky' at their next talk.
The NTS Angus Members’ Centre is resuming its afternoon talks in Forfar’s Guide Hall next Thursday, November 11 at 2.30pm.

The first talk, by Derek Alexander, NTS Head of Archaeology, is entitled ‘Archaeology of Whisky’.

The National Trust for Scotland has formed a partnership with The Glenlivet single malt whisky to launch Pioneering Spirit – a project looking at the illicit production and smuggling of Scotch whisky.

The aim is to combine archive research, studies of whisky-related artefacts in Trust collections and archaeological digs to investigate the impact that the chequered history of whisky production has had on Scotland’s cultural heritage and even on its modern way of life.

Archaeological digs have taken place across The Glenlivet site and at various National Trust for Scotland locations. There are many forgotten illicit stills and associated bothies at Trust properties, from Torridon and Kintail in the north, all the way south to Grey Mare’s Tail.

Several have been found on Mar Lodge Estate, close to The Glenlivet distillery on Speyside. We will hear about the progress of the project and the interesting discoveries found so far.

This will be a face to face talk in the Guide Hall, Myre Car Park, Forfar at 2:30pm, so come along on Thursday 11th to learn more. The talk is open to everyone and non members would be very welcome.
