Arbroath band keen to keep in tune with town

The instrumental band returned to public performance recently with carol recitals in Arbroath town centre.

Arbroath Instrumental Band has made a return to public performance for the first time since lockdown, with recent carol recitals in the town centre.

But the organisation is still in a precarious state regarding the numbers of members, and is keen to recruit more in instrumental and support capacities.

The band, which was founded in 1893, had enjoyed considerable success under its conductor Mike Robertson and also had a thriving youth band.

But Mr Robertson’s retiral, combined with Covid and the resulting lockdown, has had an impact with a substantial reduction in numbers.

The band is seeking new members to play and support.

Combined with fewer pupils coming through the school music tuition system, this has resulted in a lack of players across all sections but particularly in the bigger instruments - euphoniums, baritones and basses.

Conductor Audrey Bird and the committee are keen to hear from any previous band members who would be interesting in returning and are also recruiting new members.

Lessons and instruments can be provided.

The committee would also be keen to hear from anyone with IT/Website experience who would be able to assist with updating the band website and digitising its extensive library.

Ann Ness, chairperson said: “The band has been going for over 120 years and has had periods where lack of players was a concern. We have always weathered the storm. However, the Covid pandemic has been the only time, apart from World War Two, when rehearsals were suspended for such a long period of time.

“Unfortunately some members have stopped playing or found other interests. It’s vital that Arbroath and the surrounding area continues to have a thriving brass band and we would really like to hear from anyone who would be willing to help in any way, be that on the organisation/ IT side or to come along and enjoy making music”.

The band rehearses in Newton of Panbride Church hall, Carnoustie, on Mondays from 7.30pm - 9.30pm and beginner classes would take place from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
