Police to improve road safety

A week-long initiative aimed at improving safety and awareness for vulnerable road users is currently under way.

The initiative is part of Police Scotland’s commitment to making roads safer. Vulnerable users include pedal cyclists, horse riders and motorcyclists.

In 2012 car and pedestrian casualties decreased whilst motorcycle and pedal cycle casualties went up. Pedestrian and pedal cycle fatalities have also increased.

A spokeswoman said: “A minority of cyclists flout the law and place themselves and others in danger. Cyclists must obey all traffic signs, traffic light signals and must not cycle on pavements.”
