TAYSIDE Police have issued a safety warning about the dangers of walking on frozen ponds and rivers.

During the cold snap, ice has formed on many open stretches of water and although it looks safe, the ice can easily break causing people to get into difficulties.

And now police are urging people to stay away from frozen ponds.

Inspector Maggie Pettigrew said: “We have received a number of calls from concerned members of the public regarding youths playing on the ice on various ponds throughout Tayside.

“Ice on open water is extremely dangerous and unpredictable and we would urge people not to walk on frozen ponds or rivers.”

Anybody concerned about the safety of others near frozen water, contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222.
