News that some 566 vulnerable Angus residents have received grants totalling almost £90,000 through the Scottish Welfare Fund since its creation four months ago has been welcomed by local MSP Graeme Dey.
But the SNP member expressed concern the initiative may come under increasing financial pressure.
The Scottish Welfare Fund provides local authorities grants to deliver financial assistance to disabled people, elderly people, lone parents and other vulnerable groups.
Mr Dey said: “Although I am pleased local people have access to such a worthwhile fund I am concerned that even more will find themselves in financial misery as a result of the Tory/Lib Dem coalition approach to austerity.
“But the £33 million Scottish Welfare Fund is an example that shows the SNP Government is doing everything it can to deliver the best results for the Scottish people in the face of these unjustified and unwanted measures.”
