Proposed price freeze welcomed

The prospective Scottish Labour Party candidate for Dundee East has spoken up in support of a proposed energy price freeze.

Lesley Brennan is in favour of the proposals made by Labour leader Ed Miliband in the wake of the recent price hikes by energy suppliers.

Mr Miliband has proposed a price freeze on gas and electricity from 2015 to 2017, which on average would save households £120 and businesses £1,800 per year.

Ms Brennan said: “This shows that he understands fully the consequences of the current cost of living crisis. Since David Cameron became Prime Minister, prices have risen faster than wages in 38 out of 39 months. Energy bills have increased in total by almost £300.”

According to Ms Brennan, energy companies need to be held accountable for prices. She said: “We see energy companies passing on increases in prices to consumers when wholesale prices rise but there is no equivalent reduction in consumers’ bills when prices fall. Ed Miliband will replace the weak regulator that Ofgem is with tougher supervision that would ensure that companies pass on reductions in wholesale prices to households and to businesses.”
