This year marks a very special event on Remembrance Sunday with the centenary of the beginning of the First World War.

Throughout our area people will pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country at Remembrance services held on Sunday, November 9.

In Arbroath the Royal British Legion Scotland are holding a small ceremony at the Western Cemetery commencing at 1045, prior to the afternoon parade where they will parade from Lunan Court at 1.30 p.m., marching to the war memorial at the High Commons.

There will then be a short service at 2 p.m. when the parade reaches the Cenotaph.

A gun salute will start and finish the two minute silence and there will be a wreath-laying ceremony.

The parade will then reform and march back to the Arbroath branch clubrooms where everyone is welcome for soup and sandwiches.

There will be another Remembrance Service on Tuesday, November 11, at 11 a.m. at the War Memorial on the High Common and representatives from Arbroath’s primary schools will lay wreaths.

In Carnoustie the parade will leave from the Legion’s Dundee Street clubrooms at 12.15 p.m. on November 9.

Arbroath Royal British Legion Scotland Pipe Band will lead the parade to the war memorial for the service at 12.30 p.m.

Presiding over the service is Rev. Matthew Bicket and Carnoustie High School band will also play.

The Legion has found relatives of Carnoustie’s Great War casualties who will lay special commemorative wreaths.

In Monifieth the parade will leave at 10.15 a.m. on Remembrance Sunday from Tesco’s loading car park on Reform Street.

Massed pipes will lead the march along to St Rules Church for a service commencing at 10.45 a.m. and adjourning at 12 noon.

At 12.20 p.m. the parade will reform on Church Street and then proceed north along Church Street and Hill Street to the war memorial at Albert Street for a short joint service and wreath laying ceremony, expected to conclude at 1.15 p.m.
