Rent arrears still falling

ANGUS Council tenants’ rent arrears are still falling members of the neighbourhood services committee were informed at their meeting on Thursday, but the decline is slowing.

The committee noted reports which showed there had been a continuous drop in rent arrears since 2007, but future changes to housing benefit and the current economic climate may impact on the decline.

Convener of neighbourhood services Councillor Jim Millar said: “We continue to make it clear that although the council will give support to tenants facing difficulties in paying rent and take early steps to prevent arrears accumulating, we still expect payment of rent to be seen as a priority.”

The committee agreed to note the current performance and progress in pursuing serious arrears and agreed that future rent arrears performance should be reported quarterly.
