FIFTEEN-year-old Robert Ritchie from Carnoustie has returned home after a month-long trip to Malawi with the Scout Explorers Malawi Expedition.

The 37 Scouts and 13 leaders from across Scotland helped to build a modern maize mill and other facilities at the national campsite of the Scout Association of Malawi.

Thanks to this, they will generate an income and be more self-sufficient. This will be of benefit to the local community which will be able to more easily process maize, which is a staple food in Malawi.

Robert described the recent trip as “absolutely amazing”. He went on: “The local people were very friendly and very welcoming. It was a fantastic feeling knowing that what we had done has made a difference and one day I would love to return to Malawi.”

He extended thanks to everyone in the community who helped toward the fund-raising which enabled him to experience the amazing trip and the leaders.
