A WELL-KNOWN local musician has gained a place to play with the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO).

Ross Knight, who has just completed his second year of study at The Royal Academy of Music in London, auditioned with hundreds of top musicians across the European Union and has been invited to play with the orchestra on their summer course and tour.

Ross joined the orchestra in Bolzano in Italy yesterday (Thursday) to spend the first two weeks rehearsing with the players who come from all 27 European Union countries.

After this they will embark on a three-week tour playing nine concerts in Bolzano, Stresa and Rimini in Italy; Berlin, Kassel and Darmstadt in Germany; Schloss Grafenegg in Austria; and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The orchestra will also play a concert at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh on Thursday, August 23, as part of the tour.

This has been an extremely busy year for Ross. As well as gaining a place in the EUYO, he won the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Player of the year. This has led on to him being invited to play as a soloist with the famous Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band at the Birmingham Symphony Hall on September 2 and also with BBC Concert Orchestra in London on October 3. Both these performances will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 2.

Over the years, Ross has been given tremendous support from the local community who have turned out to hear him play at the solo performances that he has given to date.

There will be opportunity to hear Ross play in Dundee on December 6 when he has been invited by the Dundee Chamber Society to perform a recital in St Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral at 7.30 p.m. On this occasion he will be accompanied by Jenny Miles, a pianist who also studied at the Royal Academy of Music.
