I haven’t been in Forfar very long but in my short time here, I have quickly picked up on the stellar reputation of the restaurants and pubs serving food.
That acclaim didn’t help me too much when it came to making my mind up about where to go for my first review!
But a visiting friend and I finally decided on The Stag for an evening meal on a Friday night, and what a fine decision it proved to be.
We were quickly seated on our arrival and shown the specials board by a lovely member of the waiting staff.
I opted for the tiger prawns in a ginger-laced sauce to start while Lucy had the soup of the day, a cream of mushroom lightly spiced with truffle.
The prawns were nice and thick, and though bigger prawns tend to lose some of their flavour compared to their leaner brethren I thought the sauce was excellent in adding that slight kick.
Lucy described the soup as creamy and bursting with flavour, and the crusty rolls served with the soup were shared and heartily enjoyed by both of us.
The Stag has discreet areas for customers in for food and those just in for a drink so while the latter was pretty busy, the atmosphere in the dining area was more reserved and Lucy and I were able to have a great lengthy catch-up in peace.
Our main courses were brought out as soon as the plates from our starters were taken away which was excellent, though likely in part to how long we took talking without eating!
I ordered the gourmet burger with red onion chutney and chips and Lucy had the traditional fish and chips.
The chips were as thick as Lucy’s wrist, wonderfully crispy on the outside and fluffy and soft on the inside - we were both big fans of those.
My burger came out well done, which is just how I prefer my meat, and on a crusty bun which was delicious. The patty was perhaps a little dry but the tasty garnish covered that for the most part.
Lucy’s fish was a great size and the flesh was lovely and flaky, coated in a nice, crunchy batter.
The waiting staff were lovely and chatty without bothering us about our meal and were right on hand to get us fresh drinks, which was a Godsend with Friday’s weather.
