THE ACTIVE Angus summer activities programme was launched today (Wednesday) at Northmuir Primary School, Kirriemuir, by Councillor Jeanette Gaul, Angus Council vice-convener of neighbourhood services.
She said: “Once more, we have on offer an extensive and varied programme of sports and activities to suit children of all ages and with different levels of skills. This will be an opportunity for our schoolchildren to enjoy, and improve in, their favourite sports, and to try out some new activities.”
The programme runs from Monday, July 2, until Friday, August 10, and includes all Angus Council leisure facility activities, sports specific coaching, dance workshops, Rural Summer Active Club, Angus Scottish FA summer football and sport and recreation for people with a disability.
The Rural Summer Active Club for children aged from five to 12 years will be held over a specific number of days in Letham, Friockheim, Glenisla, Birkhill and Edzell.
The AVIVA Star:track Athletics programme will run in Kirriemuir, Arbroath, Carnoustie, Forfar Montrose and Monifieth, for children aged from six to 12.
A number of links have again been made with local golf professionals giving opportunities for seven to 14-year-olds to learn new golf skills this summer. Golf coaching is taking place in Forfar, Brechin, Montrose and Arbroath. This year’s programme includes five Clubgolf Mini Opens running in Arbroath, Carnoustie Montrose, Monifieth and Forfar.
Angus Sports Development Team are also offering P5 to S2 boys and girls two, three-day basketball camps running from July 17 to 19 at Lochside Leisure Centre, Forfar; and from July 31 to August 2 at Saltire Leisure Centre, Arbroath. A rugby camp will be held in Friockheim from the July 9 to 12 for young people in P4 to S2.
Leisure Services dance programme Active Dance has a number of workshops taking place across Angus including Arbroath, Kirriemuir, Carnoustie, Forfar, Montrose and Brechin.
A full Scottish FA summer football programme is on offer Forfar, Montrose, Carnoustie, Arbroath, Kirriemuir and Brechin for boys and girls aged from three to 16 years.
A full and varied sport and recreation programme is also available for people with a disability throughout Angus. This programme includes activities for three to seven-year-olds and 15-year-olds and over. Activities include swimming, mountain biking, dance, rebound therapy and rounders and barbecue.
Active Angus 2012 also provides information on sports and activities taking place at all Angus Council sports centres and swimming pools over the summer period. Each of the facilities has a wide range of activities available including holiday clubs.
Most of the activities in the booklet coming under the bACTIVE membership scheme which will allow a child to attend as many activities throughout the holidays as they would like for less than a pound a day.
The Active Angus 2012 programme will be distributed to all Angus Primary Schools and is also available at all Angus Council leisure facilities, country parks, libraries, museums, ACCESS offices and online at www.angus.gov.uk/leisure.
