ALMOST 90 riders from Rowanlea Riding School, West Cotside, Barry, took part in the annual New Year ride on Monday.

Once again the event was organised by David Conchie and this year the riders were led by Irene Conchie and Leo Lorimer.

On a bright day, they followed what is now the traditional course.

After leaving the stables they headed for Woodhill then took the old Arbroath Road towards Carnoustie.

They came down through Mains of Ravensby Farm then through Pitskelly Farm, emerging at the back of Barry Church.

The riders then headed past Barry Primary School to Barry Buddon Camp. Their circuit round the camp took them past the lighthouse after which they headed off towards Monifieth. They took the road towards Ardestie Toll, turned along the farm track past Balhungie Farm and Woodhill Farm, through Woodhill then back to the stables.

There the attraction was hot soup and stovies prepared by Kirsty McDonald.

David Conchie told the Guide & Gazette: “It was a marvellous turnout and we had youngsters from about seven to senior citizens of over 70 years taking part.

“The ride has been going on now for 45 years. It was started by my father and the idea is to keep off the main roads.”
