A CARNOUSTIE pub hosted a different take on a Burns night last week.

On Friday night the Aboukir Hotel provided the venue for the informal ‘Robbie Burns Supper’ which was enjoyed by a capacity crowd.

Host for the evening was director of the Aboukir Hotel Dave Scorgie. Master of ceremonies and toastmaster was Colin Warden OBE.

Bill Scorgie, chairman of the Aboukir Grumpies, entertained his audience with a rendition of Burns’ ‘I’ll Ca’ In By Yon Toon’ as well as some amusing anecdotes.

Members of the Aboukir Grumpies gave the toasts, although not necessarily in the traditional format, which blended Rabbie Burns and the history of Carnoustie in hilarious fashion.

Ian Swan gave the ‘Toast Tae The Lassies and their Droothie Cronies’, Howard Evans gave the ‘Toast Tae Carnoustie and its Worthies’ and Bob Brown gave the ‘Selkirk Grace’ and the vote of thanks.

Traditional music was provided by the Stewart Anderson trio and ‘Aff the Cuff’ folk session members Jim Duke, Ian Hunter and Ken Johnston.

It is hoped that this might become an annual fixture in the Aboukir.
