The first concert for 2014 from the Tayside Symphony Orchestra takes place in the Reid Hall, Forfar on Saturday, February 8.

Taking the form of ‘February Favourites’, the programme consists of well-known works by popular composers, including ‘Nimrod’ from the Enigma Variations, the Intermezzo from ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’, a selection from ‘Evita’, Ponchielli’s ‘Dance of the Hours’, the theme from ‘Out of Africa’ and many others.

The concert is dedicated to Audrey Brown, a valued member of the cello section, who died recently. She had been a member of the TSO for many years.

Audrey’s sister Muriel, a very talented violinist, is to be the guest soloist for the concert.

Conductor Ron Walker said: “Traditionally the February concert has had a lighter theme so that it would appeal to all musical tastes.

“For that reason our February programme has always been very well attended, indeed on one memorable occasion a few years ago the Reid Hall was virtually full. We would like to have the same experience again this time round.”

Reluctantly, the committee has decided to increase the price of tickets by £2 due to increased costs. This makes the full price now £12 with concessions at £10 (children under 16 still free of charge).

If there is sufficient demand a bus will run from Montrose/Brechin to Forfar; details will be provided nearer the time.

Tickets will be available in the new year at TSO’s regular outlets: Toy Castle, Castle Street, Forfar; Hogg’s, High Street, Montrose; any member of TSO/TSO committee or at the door on the evening of the concert. Doors open at 6.45 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7.30 p.m.
