Twins land dream role
at animation studios

Identical twins from Monifieth are heading for Manchester this summer for a month-long placement with an animation company which should see their work on TV.

Nineteen-year-old girls Lisa and Lauren Rankin are studying the HND computer arts and design animation course at Dundee and Angus College.

AlbinoMosquito, who make animated cartoons for CBBC, contacted the college with the aim of working with students on the course.

Such is the talent among the HND students that lecturer Henry Broadhurst set a competition to source the most suitable candidates.

Nine students took part with each having to write 200 words on why they would be suited for the role and attach a still image of their best animation work.

Despite a high standard of entry, the winners were chosen at the double – twin sisters Lisa and Lauren.

The ‘prize’ for the winners is to work at AlbinoMosquito for the whole of July, gaining industry experience with a well-established company.

Lauren said: “This is a really great opportunity for us.

“We would like to work in children’s animation in the future, so making a pilot episode which could be aired on CBBC is particularly exciting for us.”

AlbinoMosquito will finance the students’ travel and accommodation and are also organising a trip around the new BBC studios in Salford.

Lisa added: “We are happy to represent the college and hope that similar opportunities continue to be offered to other students.”

Mr Broadhurst said: “It was a tough choice but Lisa and Lauren just edged it.”
