School is in for Carnoustie Musical Society once again as they get ready for their Scottish premiere of ‘The Reunion’.

Some of the cast held their own reunion recently when they met up at the old school bell which used to ring out at the former Kinloch Primary School and which they hoped would help them get into character.

The show revolves around the titular reunion during which pupils from a Yorkshire school meet up years later for the funeral of a beloved teacher. For many life has moved on, sometimes in unexpected ways, but for a few there are some unresolved matters, and it would not be a musical if one of those was a story of young love cut off in its prime!

Mike Burns plays Tom, one of the former pupils who has something other than the funeral on his mind, namely his ex-girlfriend Debbie.

He said: “We were talking in rehearsals about our school days and quite a few of the company went to school in Carnoustie, in particular Kinloch Primary School.

“One of the songs in the show is called ‘Waiting For The Bell To Ring’ and that got us wondering what happened to all the old school equipment when Kinloch was demolished.”

As it happens the old school bell is now on display at the new Kinloch Care Centre which stands on part of the old school grounds. Mike said: “Although ‘The Reunion’ is set in the 1980s and they probably didn’t have a bell like this in a modern Yorkshire school Tom and Debbie went to, seeing the old Kinloch bell really helped us connect to what it was like being a school pupil and will hopefully help us to act a bit like a bunch of kids again!”
