OBJECTORS to mobile phone masts in Monifieth and Carnoustie were rejoicing on Tuesday night, after Angus Council's development control committee threw out applications for both burghs.
The Monifieth application, highlighted in a recent Guide & Gazette, was by Orange PCS, seeking renewal of a 10-year planning consent that had lapsed on September 30, 2005 - almost two years ago.

And neighbours were outraged that the mast had been operating since 2005 without valid planning approval.

Indeed, Angus Council received 146 letters of representation against the proposal, and a petition containing 28 names. Reasons for objecting included impact on health, too close to school, hospital and public park; impact on amenity of residents; and that the mast would not serve Monifieth and is a regional link mast only.

The Monifieth application was refused by seven votes to five.

The Carnoustie application was by National Grid Wireless, for an eight metre high slimline flagpole mast and ancillary equipment on the telephone exchange, Terrace Road.

Planning permission at the site had previously been refused on November 11, 2004, for a freestanding 15 metre pole with three antennae.
