LAURA Gonzalez-Escallon, from Brussels, won the British Girls' Open Amateur Golf Championship held last week over the Monifieth Medal Course and in so doing became the fifth continental player in the past six years to lift the title.
The number one qualifier Laura beat the sixth seed Kelly Tidy, Royal Birkdale, by 2 and 1 in Friday afternoon's 18-hole final. It was the second successive year the 16-year-old Manchester player had been beaten in the final.

The first three holes
were halved in par before 17-year-old Laura stepped up a gear to birdie the long 4th and short 5th.

Kelly managed to half the 4th in fours, but she could not match her opponent's two at the 5th. Tidy then birdied the par four 8th and the par five 9th to wipe out the Belgian's lead.

The 10th hole was halved in fours as both players sought to edge ahead going into the home straight.

Gonzalez-Escallon got her third birdie of the final with a two at the short 12th to regain a one-hole lead, but Tidy was back on terms at the next where the Belgian player's five at this par four hole was her first bogey of the day.

It was Tidy's turn to bogey, only her second of the afternoon, at the short 14th and that put Gonzalez-Escallon back into a one-hole lead with four holes to play.

The 15th and 16th were halved.

Tidy drove into the left rough at the 17th and recovered to about eight yards from the pin, but took three shots to get down from there for a bogey five to her opponent's cast-iron par four, leaving Gonzalez-Escallon the victor by 2 and 1.
