BROUGHTY Athletic entertained Violet in the first competitive action of the season at Whitton Park on Saturday, for a DJ Laing Cup Section Four game. Conditions at kick-off were near perfect after the downpours of the previous two days.
Broughty handed starting debuts to Gary Munn and Robert Smith, with new signing Bobby Brown finding a place on the bench.

Broughty started the game very slowly and were punished within five minutes when home goalie Anderson saved Grant's drive as
far as KIDDIE, who turned the ball into an empty net from 10 yards.

It was all one-way traffic as Violet pushed for a second with only home keeper Anderson and poor finishing keeping the score at 1-0.

In one of Broughty's rare attacks of the half O'Leary was unlucky to see his effort hit the side netting after good work involving MacLeod, Russell and Kirk.

Half Time: Broughty Athletic 0, Violet 1.

Broughty started the second half in more positive fashion. In the 50th minute a great move involving Russell, Smith and O'Leary saw visiting goalie Kelly turn Kirk's attempt around the post for a corner.

Violet came more into the game at this point and should have made it two when only Anderson will know how he missed with the goal at his mercy.

Play was end-to-end and next up was Kirk who saw his side foot volley drift inches wide in the 65th minute.

The game was all but finished in the 70th minute when Violet doubled their lead when ANDERSON side footed home after Broughty again failed to clear their lines.

In the 78th minute Russell was unlucky when his shot from the edge of the box was inches too high.

Violet finished the game as a contest when REYNOLDS dispossessed substitute Murdoch and saw his shot from 25 yards bounce under Anderson and into the net in the 82nd minute.

The closing action of a disappointing home performance saw chances from Myles and then Russell well saved by keeper Kelly.

Broughty Athletic - Anderson, Farrell (Murdoch), Smith, Russell, Cormack (Trialist), Kirk, O'Leary, Munn, Bertie (Myles), Cameron, MacLeod.
