Carnoustie High School FP 44, Cumnock 0

CARNOUSTIE High School FPs hosted visitors Cumnock, Ayrshire, in a friendly played in four sessions with no restraint on the number of substitutions made.
FPs were penalised and Cumnock kicked for touch, but with little length gained. Carnoustie drove well from the line-out, but the chip ahead from Bruce Langlands was carried by the wind, enabling an easy touchdown.

The drop-out was run back by Davi
d Air and Langlands to five metres from the visitors' line. Cumnock won the scrum and cleared to the 22.

Carnoustie forwards drove and the ball was recycled quickly, but an inside switch by the backs was dropped. Retaining possession, the FPs set up repeat drives, which culminated in a penalty, which Chris Rankin converted.

Langlands kicked long and an excellent chase caught the full-back in possession. Carnoustie won the scrum and HUGHES picked up and drove over with Rankin adding full points.

At the start of the second session, Cumnock failed to make 10 metres from the kick-off, but Carnoustie fielded cleanly and drove forward before releasing their backs.

The home side were awarded a penalty to gain a footing in the visitors' 22. From the line-out, backs and forwards combined in a flowing movement left to right, recycled and came back right to left, giving Jamie ALLEN, on the wing, room to score far out. The difficult conversion kick was missed.

The next session began with Carnoustie kicking-off and Cumnock knocking-on. From the scrum, the home side chipped ahead and Cumnock pushed the ball into touch.

The line-out was won and Cumnock penalised. From the quick tap, good running and quick hands gave AIR a scoring opportunity, which he took but again the kick was unsuccessful.

The home side maintained position and again a chip found touch six metres from the line. The line-out was won and the ball sent wide for RANKIN to add another unconverted try.

The restart was taken cleanly and driven upfield to touch on the 22.

Cumnock won the line-out, but Carnoustie turned over the ball and, with the defence in disarray, LANGLANDS strode to the line.

Hughes took the kick-off for the final session cleanly and drove forward. Carnoustie gained a penalty but missed touch.

Cumnock then counter-attacked and set up repeated drives close to the home line. Despite giving away several penalties, Carnoustie defended excellently and eventually broke the siege.

Esposito intercepted a pass in his own 22 and made ground before passing to Air who set Ally MACDONALD into space to touch down under the posts with Haxton adding full points.

FPs were again forced to defend deep but stood firm and again broke away with ALLEN sprinting clear up the wing to touch down at the posts. Rankin added the conversion.

Team - Haxton, Marshall, Rankin, Air, Allen, Langlands, Anderson, Dissell, Esposito, Millar, Murphy, Essex, McAlister, Liness, Hughes, Macdonald, Coffield, Bowles.
