There's something about St Andrews and the Old Course that brings the best out of the McNicoll golfing family from Carnoustie.
Keir McNicoll won the St Andrews Links Trophy a few weeks back with an outstanding performance and, last Thursday, younger sister Katy won the St Andrews Links Trust's Junior Ladies' tournament for the Golf Monthly Trophy.

In a pulsating final played in heavy rain, the Carnoustie girl and 18-year-old Jane Turner, from Penicuik, served up some excellent golf and both were three-under-par when the tie finished all square after the regulation 18 holes.

It was at the second extra hole when Katy, 20, finally clinched the title with a stunning eagle 3.

But that was not the end of the McNicoll family's successes in Fife in recent days.

A par three at the second hole of a three-way sudden-death play-off was good enough to give Keir victory in the Standard Life Leven Gold Medal on Sunday. It was the 23-year-old's second 72-hole strokeplay success of the season, following his win in the St Andrews Links Trophy at the beginning of June.

The two other players contesting the play-off were reigning Scottish Open Amateur Strokeplay champion Wallace Booth, Comrie, and Dollar's Scott Borrowman. Booth was bunkered and bogeyed the hole as did Borrowman with three putts after a too-strong tee shot.

Four off the pace with 18 holes remaining, McNicoll's four under par final round 67 included an eagle 2 at the 3rd and an eagle 3 at the 12th. He also birdied the 2nd, 10th and 13th in halves of 33 and 34. Bogeys at the 5th, 6th and 16th were the only blemishes on his card..
