Club history marked at Gayfield

Arbroath Football Club have a announced a Gala Celebration Dinner to mark the 130th anniversary of the world record breaking 36-0 scoreline.

Achieved on September 12, 1885 Arbroath beat Aberdeen Bon Accord in the legendary match.

Chairman Mr John Christison, is looking forward to the weekend of celebration for the club.

He said: “The fact that this record remains in place is testament to the tremendous performance of those players and it is only right and proper that the club should celebrate this milestone anniversary.

“I would urge as many people as possible from Arbroath and wider afield to come along and be part of the club’s celebrations.”

The dinner will be held within a marquee erected on the pitch at Gayfield Stadium; after receiving a welcome drink, guests will enjoy a three course dinner which will be followed by entertainment.

Host Mr Bill Leckie, a Scottish journalist and broadcaster, will be joined by the comedian Jimmy Stirling and lifelong Arbroath supporter Ian Wishart.

Notable individuals from Scottish football will be also be supporting the main speakers.

Attracting particular interest will be an auction in which Arbikie Highland Estate, which is producing limited edition bottles of vodka and gin to celebrate the anniversary, will provide three special bottles for attendees to bid on.

Remaining bottles will be available for purchase.

A Hall of Fame has been set up to recognise the significant achievements of players, managers and officials who have made a very significant contribution to the successful operation of Arbroath FC over the years.

The first three people will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during the dinner.

Arbroath FC are also to hold a charity dance within the pitch marquee the next evening, Saturday, September 12.

A food and craft fair will be held on Sunday, September 13 at a cost of £20 per table and a car boot sale which will cost £10 per vehicle.
