It was heartbreak for the Lichties after a 2-0 defeat to Airdrieonians at New Broomfield condemned Arbroath to SPFL League Two football next season.
Recent results had given Paul Sheerin’s men hope they could avoid the dreaded drop but it wasn’t to be on the final day of the season as goals from Caolan McAleer and sub Liam Coogans gave the Diamonds the points and sent the Lichties down.
Arbroath had a good penalty shout late on in the first half but referee Colin Steven waved away the appeals after Paul McManus looked to have been bundled over by Stefan Milojevic.
To make matters worse, Airdrie went ahead not long after when a Keigan Parker corner dropped in the box for McAleer to lash the ball home.
Bobby Linn was trying to pull the strings for the visitors after the break and Sheerin had a shot from edge of box midway through the second period.
But as the clocked ticked down Arbroath were hit with a sucker punch as Coogans steered home a corner and put the final nail in Arbroath’s season.
The players gave all they had but ultimately it wasn’t to be and it’s the bottom tier of Scottish football next term.
