BROUGHTY Athletic scored three goals in a match for the third consecutive week when they defeated Broughty United AFC 3-0 in a friendly played at Whitton Park on Saturday.
All the goals were scored in the second half. Ross Kenny opened the scoring in the 55th minute, finishing off a fine passing move from close range.
Twelve minutes later John Farquharson made it two with a free kick from 25 yards. The Fed’s third goal came from Graham Allan, with a strike from inside the box in the 73rd minute.
“A worthwhile exercise,” was manager Kenny Cameron’s comment at the end.
The results of the five Premier League matches played on Saturday were: Tayport 0, Sauchie Juniors 0; Penicuik Athletic 2, Glenrothes 1; Newtongrange Star 3, Arniston Rangers 1; Broxburn Athletic 4, Oakley United 2; Armadale Thistle 1, Downfield 0.
Arniston Rangers’ away defeat by Newtongrange Star means the Gers now have the difficult task of trying to win each of their last four fixtures to reach 23 points. That challenge begins on Saturday when they host the visit of relegation rivals Armadale Thistle.
The Dale’s narrow home win over Downfield today gives them 19 points, and this now makes their visit to Gorebridge even more important. Victory in their last two fixtures would give Armadale a maximum of 25 points - and relegate Arniston in the process.
On 20 points at the moment, Downfield have one match left, the visit of promotion favourites Sauchie Juniors. Also in Dundee next week, the Fed (on 21 points and two games left) have equally formidable opponents when second top Penicuik are the Whitton Park visitors in a match which kicks-off at 2.30 p.m.
“All to play for,” as Kenny Cameron is fond of saying.
