CARNOUSTIE Panmure made the trip to Recreation Park on Saturday to meet St Andrews United in the McBookie.com East Super League.
Manager Ian Gilzean stuck with the same starting line-up that had lost to Sauchie Juniors the previous week. Bench spots went to Josh Perera, Mike McIlravey, Danny Millar, Harry Neave and goalkeeper Chris Macpherson.
With only four minutes on the watch, the Gowfers were stunned when McQuade fired in a shot which was blocked away, but was then played back in to a crowded goalmouth and DIGNAN got a touch to knock it past McGovern.
The Gowfers were awarded a free kick when M. Scott was fouled by Dignan and Ferguson sent his kick deep into home territory looking for Dailly, but another well-timed interception by Hendry cleared any danger. St Andrews doubled their lead in 16 minutes after Suttie played the ball into the Gowfer’s box and a hesitant defence allowed McQUADE to fire into the net.
Sutherland became the first player to be shown a yellow card for comments made to the referee. Two minutes later the homesters were denied a penalty when a Clark corner appeared to hit a hand, but the referee waved away the appeals.
The Gowfers had a half chance to pull a goal back when Roberts played a great ball through to Dailly, but the Carnoustie man let it run a shade too far in front of him and Sloan came rushing off his line to claim it.
Five minutes later the Gowfers did get a goal back when Dailly played a good ball across the 18-yard line and L. SCOTT picked it up, drove forward and fired it past Sloan into the back of the net. With a minute to go to the break, the Gowfers were forced to make a change with Hunter limping off and Millar taking over in his place.
Half-time: St Andrews 2, Carnoustie Panmure 1.
Before the second half got under way, the home side made their first change with R. Hunter taking over from Hendry. They nearly added to their tally in 49 minutes when McQuade played the ball into the box to McInnes who side-footed it goalwards, but fortunately Cook was on hand to block it away off the line.
In 53 minutes Seeley went down injured and was helped from the pitch with McAllister taking his place. Just on the hour mark, Dailly linked well with M. Scott, who cut into the box where only a great saving tackle by Sutherland stopped him getting his shot off.
In 65 minutes the Gowfers made a further change with Clark coming off to make way for McIlravey.
In 70 minutes the home side made their third and final change with Buchan taking over from McQuade and the Gowfers made their final substitution with M. Scott making way for Perera.
Six minutes later, Cook sent a free kick deep into the Saint’s box which was cleared by R. Hunter, but only as far as McIlravey who fired in a shot which was off target and went out behind.
In 84 minutes the Gowfers deservedly leveled the tie. Robertson played a great through-ball to McILRAVEY who took it down the right, almost to the by-line and cut inside R. Hunter before drilling the ball past Sloan into the bottom corner of the net.
They very nearly snatched the lead two minutes later after Cook picked out Robertson with a great cross, but his glancing header slid inches past Sloan’s right-hand post.
Buchan was then cautioned for a foul on McIlravey. Deep into stoppage time the Gowfers won a free kick some 30 yards out when L. Scott was brought down by Porteous. Before the kick could be taken, Suttie was booked for kicking the ball away and Millar then hit his shot straight at Sloan who had no trouble making the stop.
Millar was then booked after the ‘keeper’s long clearance found Patrick who was tripped by the Carnoustie player.
