Carnoustie Panmure 4, Brechin Vics 0

CARNOUSTIE Panmure played host to Brechin Vics in the first game of the season in the D.J. Laing League Cup on Wednesday evening.

For the tie, manager Ian Gilzean was forced to make changes to the side that defeated Carnoustie YM in a friendly on Saturday. Regular ‘keeper Chris MacPherson picked up a knock in that game and his place between the sticks was taken by a young trialist. Scott Hunter and Scott Robertson were both on from the start with John Young dropped to the bench.

Carnoustie kicked off, but it was the visitors who showed much of the early attacking. They had a half-chance when Myles fired in a shot from the edge of the box, but it was deflected high into the air and the trialist ‘keeper easily clutched the ball.

The Gowfers began to come into the game and Clark sent in a good cross which found Neave, but Robbie got down well and put the ball out for fruitless corner.

In 24 minutes the Gowfers’ pressure told when another cross from Clark found ROBERTSON who headed home well. Seven minutes later they doubled their lead when yet another great cross from Clark this time found M. SCOTT who drilled the ball into the corner of the net.

In 33 minutes the Gowfers almost added a third when Neave fired in a shot from 30 yards, but Robbie got up to make a great save and touch the ball over the top. They came close again in 40 minutes when M. Scott was chopped down at the edge of the box. Clark took the free-kick well, but saw it clip the top of the bar.

Half-time: Carnoustie Panmure 2, Brechin Vics 0.

In the second half Carnoustie continued to dominate and on the hour Clark took the ball down the left and fired in a great shot which was cleared off the line by Gourlay, but only as far as M. SCOTT who hit it back into the net from outside the box

In 84 minutes, after three assists, CLARK got on the scoresheet himself when he fired in from the edge of the box to get Carnoustie’s fourth.
