First away win of season still eludes Gowfers

AFTER being given the go-ahead following an early morning pitch inspection, Carnoustie Panmure travelled to Volunteer Park to face Armadale Thistle in the ACA Sports East Premier League on Saturday.

Two changes were made to the side beaten by Ballingry Rovers the previous week.

John Tonner was on from the start for the injured Alan McSkimming, and Scott Robertson replaced Robert Hendry who dropped to the bench where he was joined by Greg Beattie, Kevin Cumming, Mike McIlravey and spare ‘keeper Craig Jamieson.

Armadale kicked-off on a surface made heavy by recent rain, with a stiffish wind at their backs. Thistle came close in five minutes. Chilton was put clear on the left by Mauchline and after advancing almost to the bye-line, sent the ball flashing across the six-yard box and out behind with S. Brown just failing to get the touch.

In eight minutes, B. Roberts fouled Perera 40 yards out, but Milne failed to get enough weight behind Clark’s free kick and gave Walker no trouble.

Carnoustie again came close in 15 minutes after Buchanan fouled Clark 25 yards out. Clark took the kick himself and got the ball up and over the defensive wall, but it crashed off the junction of the bar and Walker’s left-hand post with the ‘keeper nowhere and was cleared by Steel.

In 20 minutes, Milne chased a long through-ball from Hunter, but Walker rushed out to thump clear.

The ball carried to the other end where an S. Brown shot was deflected by Narey for a corner.

In 40 minutes, the Gowfers survived a scare when S. Brown ran on to a long through ball from Steel and dodged past Tonner before sending in a low drive, which produced a fine save from McCafferty at the base of his right post.

Right on the half-time whistle, Armadale’s G. Brown was shown the yellow card for a foul on Robertson.

Half-time: Armadale Thistle 0, Carnoustie Panmure 0.

The first chance of the second half fell to Armadale in 54 minutes when G. Brown picked out Meechan at the back post, but his header was weak and gave McCafferty no trouble.

Back came the Gowfers and in 64 minutes Clark got his head to a Gates cross and the ball spun high in the air. It eventually dropped to J. Roberts, but he blasted his shot well wide of Walker’s left-hand post.

Two minutes later, Robertson linked with Cook before setting up J. Roberts, who again tried his luck, but this time sent the ball narrowly over the top from 25 yards.

The first substitution of the match was made by Armadale in 72 minutes with Wardlaw replacing Valentine.

A minute later, Carnoustie also made a change, with McIlravey taking over from Cook.

The Gowfers mounted another promising attack when McIlravey picked up a loose ball in midfield and fed it forward to Perera, who drilled in a shot, but sent it well wide of Walker’s right-hand post.

Thistle were next to come close when Wardlaw sent a free kick deep into the visitors’ box and, following a bit of a scramble, Mauchline fired into the side-netting, although McCafferty appeared to have it covered.

In 81 minutes, Carnoustie made a second change with Clark being replaced by Cumming. Connolly took over from Chilton for Armadale.

With time fast running out, the Gowfers forced two corners in quick succession. From the second of these, the ball was cleared out to J. Roberts, who quickly played it back into the box, but Perera headed just over.

Perera was then seen to be lying on the ground injured and Milne was yellow-carded for comments made to the referee about the incident.

Just as the watch ticked over into stoppage time, Milne was then shown a straight red card for what the referee adjudged to be a reckless tackle on Johnstone. Gates and Buchanan were cautioned for comments about the ordering-off.

Moments later, the match official brought proceedings to a close and both teams were obliged to settle for a point. Carnoustie have yet to record their first away league win of the season.
