Carnoustie Panmure boss Alan McSkimming is counting down the minutes until the Super League campaign begins tomorrow (Saturday).
The Gowfers will face beaten Scottish Cup finalists Musselburgh Athletic in their Super League opener and McSkimming can’t wait to get down there.
His side finished their pre-season campaign with a 6-2 victory over Parkvale and the Carnoustie gaffer is thrilled with the number of goals and chances his players have been creating.
Alan said: “It was a fairly confident and commanding performance. We could and should have scored a lot more.
“There are lots of positives to take from the game, a lot of guys got extra minutes and we tried a few new things. So it was a good workout and a good way to sign off our pre-season.
“We’ve carefully picked who we played in pre-season so we can create chances and score goals. That isn’t to disrespect these teams, we still had to go out and beat what was in front of us, but we wanted to be going out there and creating a lot of chances.
“At the tail end of last year we were creating a lot of chances but not scoring a lot, whereas now we’re doing both of that.
“Hopefully we’ve turned a corner in that sense. I’m confident if we keep creating these chances we will score goals.
“We’re pretty much all set for the opener on Saturday, we’ll go into that game pretty much at full strength.
“We’re looking forward to the game and counting down to hearing that first whistle.
“It’s a tough game against Musselburgh. We lost 3-2 down there and drew at home. We know on our day we can match them.
“We have a better squad but no doubt they will have improved as well. There’s nothing to fear if we’re on our game.”
The Gowfers completed their four-match pre-season friendly programme on Saturday with a trip to Findon Park to meet North Region side Parkvale and ran out 6-2 winners.
Two goals from Gordon MacDonald, two from Marc Scott and one apiece from Scot Gray and Roddy Black was enough to see them notch up their fourth win from their four friendly ties.
Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the start of the new competitive season and to that end, the Gowfers play host to Musselburgh Athletic in the McBookie.com East Super League.
Last season the Midlothian club finished two places above the Gowfers and when they last visited Laing Park, back on May 23, the sides fought out a 1-1 draw, so this should be a good starter for Alan McSkimming’s men.
Tomorrow’s tie is scheduled to get underway at 2.30 p.m.
Then on Wednesday, the Gowfers make the short trip to Whitton Park to meet new boys Broughty Athletic in the first of the two mid-week games scheduled for the start of the season.
The last time the pair met at Whitton Park was just over two years ago when, in a mid-season friendly, the Gowfers ran out 4-0 winners.
Kick-off for this one will be at 7.00 p.m.
