WITH no official games programmed over the festive period, Gowfer’s manager Ian Gilzean and his counterpart at Broughty Athletic, Kenny Cameron, arranged a friendly at Laing Park on Tuesday.
Because of the holidays both teams were short-handed and, with the Fed having no substitutes, it was agreed that, if needed, Carnoustie substitute Shaun McLaren would play for the visitors, leaving the Gowfers with two.
The game got underway in almost perfect conditions, and the visitors shocked Carnoustie in three minutes when Macleod played a good ball through to BRASH who drilled it past McCafferty to put the visitors ahead.
The Gowfers had to make an early change when Milne, who was suffering from a stomach bug, was replaced by Tonner.
The game was swinging from end to end and in 23 minutes BRASH earned the unenviable distinction of scoring at both ends when, in an attempt to clear a Gates cross, he deflected the ball past his own ‘keeper.
In 36 minutes the Fed were forced to make a change, with Torrance limping off and the Gowfer’s McLaren taking his place. Four minutes later the Gowfers edged in front, when Gates played a great ball through to McILRAVEY, who fired it past McPherson, giving him no chance.
Half-time: Carnoustie Panmure 2, Broughty Athletic 1.
At the start of the second half, the Gowfers made another change, with Cook being replaced by Matthew.
Although play continued from end to end, it took until 77 minutes for another goal to be scored, with Carnoustie extending their lead.
Hendry fed a good ball through to new signing WATSON and he hammered the ball past the ‘keeper for the homesters’ third. Although, as with the rest of the game, the play went from end to end, there was no more scoring, and after the final whistle, both managers agreed the match had been worthwhile and of much more use than a training session.
Carnoustie Panmure: McCafferty, Cook (Matthew 45), Bell, Roberts, Millar, Hendry, McIlravey, Clark, Watson, Milne (Tonner 10). Substitutes: Both used.
Broughty Athletic: McPherson, Macleod, Bertie, Ogilvie, Allan, Torrance (McLaren 36), Garrick, Brash, Dailly, Lunan, Farquharson. Substitutes: McLaren (Carnoustie).
Referee: Mr. Ross McIntyre, Dundee.
Third time lucky for Gowfers
Fixtures have now been issued for the first game of the New Year, and, with the majority of the previous programmed ties having been postponed due to the frosty weather, league secretary John Reilly has stuck with the same list in an attempt to get them played.
The Gowfers will, therefore, be at home to Lochee United on Saturday, January 7, with a 1.45 p.m. start. Before that however, they hope to welcome Tayport to Laing Park, as their First Foots, on Tuesday January 3, for a friendly match, which will get underway at 1.30 p.m.
Broughty win in Montrose
Broughty Athletic won their friendly against Montrose Roselea, 1-0, on Christmas Eve, with a 65th minute penalty scored by Ross Lunan.
