Gowfers’ game off yet again!

Have your say

ON SATURDAY, Carnoustie Panmure were again forced to sit it out after Laing Park failed a 9 a.m. pitch inspection.

Several showers of rain throughout the week with around an inch of snow on Wednesday night which had fortunately gone by Thursday afternoon, left the centre area very soft. The current situation is that, should the match referee refuse to start the game, and the home side haven’t asked for a pitch inspection, then they become liable for the full travelling expenses of the visitors.

Not wishing to fall into this trap, Gowfer’s secretary, Andy Finlay called for a pitch inspection and local referee Mike Roncone arrived at 9 a.m. Faced with the condition of the middle of the pitch and a bitterly cold, gale-force wind, he didn’t take long to decide that the game could not go ahead.

The day was not entirely wasted, however, as Bill Paley, who runs a landscaping business in the town, assisted by several members of the committee, lifted a large area of the centre of the pitch and relaid it on Sunday with fresh turf. It is hoped that this drastic action will see an end to what has been an ongoing problem, given of course that weather conditions are not too severe.

Tomorrow’s match

Tomorrow (Saturday), the Gowfers are again scheduled to be at home, with the visitors being St Andrews United, for a tie in the McBookie.com East Superleague. This game was originally arranged for two weeks ago, but had to be postponed because of ground conditions.

While the Gowfers have been idle over the last three weeks and may be a bit rusty, the Saints have remained match fit by taking two rearranged fixtures on their own pitch, but have lost them both.

They currently prop up the table with 11 points, with the Gowfers only just above them, two points better off, so this tie takes on the mantle of the proverbial ‘six pointer’ and will no doubt be keenly contested. The match will get under way at 2.30 p.m.
