West Calder United 0, Carnoustie Panmure 0
Carnoustie Panmure, were on the road again on Saturday as they headed for Hermand Park, to meet West Calder United in a second round tie in the Scottish Junior Cup.
For the tie, manager Alan McSkimming was forced to make some changes to the side that lost to Linlithgow the previous week.
With regular ‘keeper, Neal Ferrie being unavailable, Chris Macpherson took over between the sticks and young keeper, Josh Allardyce took a seat on the bench. Adding to the manager’s problems, Gary Kenneth, who had been down to start, felt his hamstring a bit sore and dropped to the bench, with Alan having to rearrange his defence. Also missing were the injured duo of Liam Scott and Kev Cumming.
By the time the game got under way, the early rain had cleared, but there was a gale-force wind blowing down the pitch. The homesters had an early half-chance after some five minutes when a mis-kicked clearance, by Millar, fell to Heeps, but he fired it well wide of Macpherson’s left-hand post.
In 20 minutes there were loud appeals for a penalty from the Gowfers’ players, after a corner kick, taken by Neath, was played onto the bar and struck a West Calder player’s hand, but the referee spotted nothing wrong and waved play on.
On the half-hour mark, the Gowfers had a half-chance when Simpson fired in a low ball which was just begging to be touched home, but with nobody up, it whizzed across the face of the goal and out behind.
In 35 minutes Gardiner became the first player to be shown a yellow card, this for persistent fouling. Two minutes later, the Gowfers had another chance when Black tried a shot from the edge of the box, but put the ball straight at McQuillan, who had no trouble making the save.
A minute later, M. Scott made a good run down the right, then drilled in a low shot, but the ‘keeper got down to make a save at the base of his left-hand upright. The Gowfers had another chance two minutes later when Buggins tried a long-range shot, but put the ball narrowly past, with the keeper beaten. Right on the whistle, Roberts went down after a tackle and, after treatment, had to be helped off.
Half-time: West Calder United 0, CarnoustiePanmure 0.
Before the restart, the Gowfers had to make a change as Roberts was unable to continue and Bews went on in his place.
In 50 minutes, the substitute played a great ball up the right to M. Scott who fired in a shot, but this was deflected past by Brown. Neath took the resultant corner and picked out Simpson, but he put his shot narrowly over the top.
With an hour on the watch the Gowfers made their second change with Kohler taking over from Neath. Then five minutes later Simpson made way for McIlravey. In 67 minutes there was a bit of panic in the Gowfers’ ranks, when Macpherson picked up the ball at the edge of his six-yard box and the referee deemed it was from a pass-back and awarded a free-kick to the home side.
Aitken took the kick and tried to touch it to a team-mate, but the defensive wall did its job and the ball was cleared away up the pitch to safety.
In 75 minutes, the Gowfers were awarded another corner when McIlravey’s shot was turned behind by Fox. Bews took the kick and picked out Buggins, but he was adjudged to have fouled the keeper and the referee awarded a free-kick to West Calder. In 82 minutes the home side had a chance to open their account after Fox made progress down the line, then sent in a deep cross to Brown, but he put his shot into the side net and the Gowfers were able to breathe again.
Three minutes later it was the Gowfers’ turn, but M. Scott’s shot was hit straight at McQuillan, who easily saved.
With the watch ticking over into stoppage time, the Gowfers had another slight scare after Robertson fouled Fox on the edge of the box. Heeps took the kick, but Buggins was able to intercept it and get the ball away to safety.
Seconds later the referee brought the tie to a close and it’s on to a re-run at Laing Park tomorrow.
West Calder United: McQuillan, Ross, Brown, Aitken, Paton, Gardiner, Adams, Fox, Heeps, Fleming, Rennie. Substitutes: A. McLaughlin, Sheddon, Fyffe and, S. McLaughlin.
Carnoustie Panmure: Macpherson, Cook, Buggins, Millar, Robertson, Roberts, M. Scott, Black, Neath, Birmingham, Simpson. Substitutes: Kenneth, McIlravey, Bews, Kohler and Allardyce (GK).
Tomorrow (Saturday), the Gowfers are back at home as they play host to West Calder United in their Scottish Junior Cup, second round replay. Last week’s tie, down at Hermand Park, ended in a 0-0 stalemate, so they have it all to do again.
The match must be decided on the day, so it will be straight to kicks from the penalty spot to settle it should the sides be level after the regulation 90 minutes. Although this will be the Lothian side’s first visit to Laing Park, it is not their first visit to the town, as back on December 6, 1997, the sides met in the third round of the national competition at Westfield Park, with the Gowfers running out 4-1 winners. Tomorrow’s action is scheduled to get under way at 2 p.m.
