Gowfers’ match falls victim to waterlogged pitch

Carnoustie Panmure were disappointed on Saturday when they arrived in Falkirk that their match was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Carmuirs Park, where they were due to face Camelon Juniors in a McBookie.com East Superleague fixture, had suffered from continuous rain and the pitch was waterlogged. The referee had no option but to call the game off.

Tomorrow’s match

Tomorrow (Saturday), the Gowfers get a rest from league business, when they head for Lochburn Park to meet Maryhill Juniors in the second round of the Scottish Junior Cup.

This will actually be the third time the pair have met in the national competition, although few of the Gowfers’ support will have been around to see the first meeting which was back in season 1943/44 in a third round tie, played at Lochend Road, the Gowfers’ home before their move to Westfield Park in 1947.

Their second meeting was in November, 1988, and again the Glasgow side came out on top, thanks to an 88th-minute penalty.

Hill currently play in the West Region’s Central Division One and although they are at present in the lower half of the table, a couple of weeks ago they had a terrific 4-0 home win against the then table-toppers Neilston, so are not to be taken lightly, especially on their own pitch.

Maryhill ‘old boys’ include Jim Duffy, Danny McGrain and the late Tommy Burns.

Tomorrow is also the date of the Gowfers’ annual Sportsman’s Dinner and the home side has agreed to an early kick-off and this will now be at 1.30 p.m.
