Broxburn Athletic 3, Carnoustie Panmure 1
CARNOUSTIE Panmure travelled to Albyn Park, the only synthetic pitch in the East Region, to meet Broxburn Athletic in the McBookie.com East Superleague on Saturday.
The home side kicked off and Cowan touched the ball to Weir who swivelled and knocked it back to Locke. He in turn launched it deep into the Gowfer’s box, but Millar stepped in to clear the danger.
In nine minutes Broxburn were awarded a corner after Keast’s attempted cross was turned behind by Millar. C. Young took the kick and found Cowan, but he headed well over the bar.
‘Burn opened their account in 13 minutes when Keast played the ball through to Weir who took it almost to the bye-line at the edge of the box, where he was tackled by J. Young. Both players went down and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. FAIRBAIRN took the kick and blasted the ball into the net.
In 20 minutes the Gowfers again tried to mount an attack when Neave was sent away, but Locke nipped in to clear the danger.
The home side was having the best of the play at this stage and Locke drove forward then played the ball through to Cowan, but Cook was alert to the danger and cleared well. The Gowfers had a scare when Fairbairn played the ball through to Weir, who looked offside, but was allowed to run on and square the ball to Cowan, but he wasted the chance by firing past.
It was then the Gowfers’ turn to attack with Roberts playing the ball through to Neave who was fouled by Weir. Cook took the resultant free kick to B. Clark and he also was fouled, this time by Cairns. McIlravey took the kick, but sent the ball straight through to C. Clark in the ‘Burn goal.
In 35 minutes Weir became the first player to be booked, this for comments made to the referee.
Half time: Broxburn Athletic 1, Carnoustie Panmure 0.
The Gowfers got the second half underway and had an early half-chance when J. Young linked with McIlravey who took the ball forward then sent in a cross looking for Dailly, but C. Clark came quickly off his line to take the ball cleanly.
In 50 minutes Weir limped off the park to be replaced by Johnstone.
At this stage the Gowfers were pressing forward looking to get back on level terms and McIlravey fed the ball through to Dailly who sent in a deep cross looking for Neave, but Gibson got up well to head the ball downfield. In 51 minutes, after a tackle by Pittman, Neave limped to the touchline for treatment and the Gowfers carried on with 10 men.
A minute later, J. Young made a short backpass to Macpherson and the ‘keeper was forced to kick it out of play. Cairns took the throw and seemed to catch the Gowfers’ defence off guard and when the ball came to the unmarked COWAN he fired it home to double the home side’s lead.
In 54 minutes the Gowfers were forced to make their first change with the limping Neave being replaced by M. Scott.
In 63 minutes the Gowfers got themselves back in the tie after McIlravey won a corner off Gibson. Clark took the kick and dropped the ball into a crowded goalmouth where ROBERTS got a touch to force it over the line and reduce the leeway.
However, in 76 minutes the home side restored their two goal lead. Miller picked out COWAN on the edge of the box and he drilled the ball past Macpherson into the back of the net.
The Gowfers then made a second change with J. Young going off to make way for Narey. In 81 minutes McIlravey linked with M. Scott who cut inside then tried to find Dailly, but Fairbairn got to the ball first and cleared.
Carnoustie then made their third change with Perera replacing Dailly. From a throw-in, Narey found McIlravey who passed to B. Clark who in turn fed the ball through for Perera to chase, but again Fairbairn got to it first to clear.
Deep into stoppage time Carnoustie got a corner off Cairns which was taken by B. Clark, but it was cleared by Miller.
