CARNOUSTIE Panmure on Saturday played host to East Super League new boys, Sauchie Juniors.

Making his debut between the sticks was Joe McGovern, signed from Dundee United late on Thursday afternoon.

From the kick-off Carnoustie gained a free-kick when Purvie fouled Robertson in midfield, but Cook’s kick was too strong and went straight through to the ‘keeper.

Carroll caused a bit of panic in the home defence when his cross almost reached Bell, but Cook hooked the ball away before he could shoot. At the other end the Gowfers came close to opening their account when Dailly’s cross was hit on the volley by M. Scott, but the ‘keeper brought off a fine save.

The Gowfers were awarded a free kick when Purvie fouled Dailly just outside the box. Clark’s kick was headed clear by Rennie, straight to Morgan who surged forward before being fouled by Roberts about 40 yards out. Morgan took the kick himself, but shot well wide.

The visitors opened the scoring in 20 minutes when a free kick by Carroll from 45 yards out was punched clear by McGovern, but fell kindly for CUMMINGS, on the edge of the box, and he blasted home.

However, the away side’s lead only lasted four minutes. Carnoustie equalised when Clark cut in along the edge of the box and fired in a shot which was blocked, but fell to ROBERTSON and he scored from close range.

Sauchie came roaring back and went ahead again when a long ball by Rennie found Cummings in the box and Hunter brought him down for a penalty. PURVIE took the kick and blasted high past McGovern.

A bad pass by Hunter then let Burns through, but McGovern blocked his shot for a corner which Cummings took and McGovern held it well.

In 40 minutes Roberts was booked for a foul on Carroll and just on half-time Robertson tried a long range effort, but it was well wide of the mark.

Half-time: Carnoustie Panmure 1, Sauchie Juniors 2.

Morgan was booked just after the restart for a foul on L. Scott some 40 yards out, but Clark’s kick was just inches too high for Hunters head and went past. Hunter then fouled Burns and the kick was taken by Purvie who found Burns in the box, but the Sauchie player had strayed offside.

In 53 minutes, Robertson was booked for a foul on Morgan and a minute later the Gowfers made their first change, replacing Dailly with Perera. Two minutes later Ferguson had his name taken for a foul on Carroll and the free kick, taken by King, was well cleared by Hunter.

The homesters then came close to levelling the score when M. Scott fired in a shot from the right-hand side of the box, but with the ‘keeper beaten the ball rebounded off the inside of the post and was cleared by Plenderleith.

Sauchie should have increased their lead when a great cross by Bell found Cummings all on his own in the six-yard box, but his header went past the upright. Carnoustie pressed for an equaliser and a good cross by Perera found M. Scott on the corner of the box but although he struck it well, his shot was wide.

They then gained a corner on the right which was taken by Clark who found Hunter, but his header was well held by the ‘keeper. Purvie was booked for a foul on M. Scott in 70 minutes.

In 73 minutes the visitors increased their lead when the Carnoustie defence was caught square by a Cummings pass through to BURNS and he coolly fired past McGovern into the corner of the net.

Five minutes later, Hunter was booked for a foul on Morgan and Perera was cautioned for dissent. In 80 minutes Sauchie replaced Cummings with Scott then a minute later there was a flurry of substitutions with Carnoustie bringing on McIlravey to replace M. Scott and the visitors replacing Bell and Carroll with S. Dolan and Ward.

McIlravey almost made his mark right away with a fine cross to Perera, but the Carnoustie man just failed to get a touch on it. In 89 minutes Sauchie missed a great chance to go further ahead when Plenderleith outstripped the Carnoustie defence, rounded McGovern, but then narrowed the angle too much and could only shoot into the side net with the goal gaping.

Right on the final whistle Carnoustie went very close when a Perera lob over the ‘keeper, from a Clark cross, landed on the roof of the net.

Carnoustie Panmure: McGovern, Cook, Ferguson, Hunter, Young, Roberts, L. Scott, Robertson, Dailly (Perera 54), M. Scott (McIlravey 81), Clark. Substitutes not used: Millar, Cowan and McPherson.

Sauchie: Halliwell, Plenderleith, Feaks, King, Rennie, Purvie, Carroll (Ward 81), Morgan, Bell (S. Dolan 81), Cummings (Scott 80), Burns. Substitutes not used: Comrie and D. Dolan.

Tomorrow’s match

Tomorrow (Saturday), the Gowfers are back on the road, heading this time for Recreation Park to meet St Andrews United in the East Super League.

The match could perhaps have some added bite with two of the Gowfers’ players from last season, Robert Hendry and Kevin Cumming, having ‘crossed the water’ to ply their trade with the Fife club. The game kicks off at 2.30 p.m. but with Leuchars Air Display also taking place, supporters intending to go to the game would be well advised to leave plenty of time for the journey, due to the greatly increased traffic.

Forthcoming fixtures

A date has now been issued for the Gowfers’ G.A. Engineering Cup Preliminary Round tie against Brechin Vics.

This will be played at Victoria Park on September 22 with a 2.30 p.m. start. Folowing this it’s back to league business with a home game against Kelty Hearts on September 29 and an away tie against Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic on October 6. East Super League
