No joy for Gowfers in Fife

Carnoustie Panmure again travelled to Fife on Saturday, this time to meet Hill o’ Beath Hawthorn in the East Superleague.

With a number of absentees, manager Alan McSkimming was forced to include five trialists in his squad with Johnny Beattie on from the start.

The Haws kicked off and forced an early corner off Cook, but Shaw’s kick was too strong and the wind carried the ball out for a goal-kick.

At the other end Milne chased a through ball from Webster, but the ‘keeper was out smartly to clear upfield. A through ball by Adamson then gave Shaw an opening, but Cook got back to make a great saving tackle and a snap shot by M. Scott from 20 yards was well held by the ‘keeper at his right-hand post.

Carnoustie were fortunate when Adamson fired a ball across the six-yard box, but nobody was able to get a touch on it. M. Scott made another attempt from outside the box, but it was blocked by the defence.

The Haws went ahead in 20 minutes when B. Smith made a fine run down the right and fired the ball across the six-yard box for SMART, at the near post, to turn the ball into the net.

They then pushed on to increase their lead and a long range shot by Smart was just over Ferrie’s bar. Brewster then cut in from the left and fired in an effort which, fortunately for the Gowfers, struck the outside of the post. A deep cross on the right by Smart was headed by Shaw, but Ferrie managed to turn it over for a fruitless corner.

Carnoustie were struggling to get into the game but had a chance when Webster fed a fine ball through to Dailly, but he shot straight at the ‘keeper.

The homesters almost got a second when Adamson was put through by Shaw, but Ferrie again made a good block to clear the shot with his legs.

Shaw was then fouled by Roberts 30 yards out, but Smart’s free-kick was straight at Ferrie. In 40 minutes, Roberts was booked for a another foul, this time on Wright.

Smart kept the pressure up and laid a chance off for Shaw but his shot was blocked by Cook. Just on half-time, Webster fired a ball into the box for Milne, but he was offside.

Half-time: Hill o’ Beath Hawthorn 1, Carnoustie Panmure 0.

Disaster struck for the Gowfers at the start of the second half when M. Scott and Shaw chased a long ball into Carnoustie’s box and the Carnoustie man was adjuged to have fouled Shaw in his attempt to get the ball. The referee awarded a penalty to the home side and booked Scott. G. SMITH took the kick and fired low into Ferrie’s bottom right-hand corner.

The Haws were piling on the pressure and a corner by G. Smith was headed clear by Myles. In 53 minutes M. Scott was replaced by Reid.

Carnoustie eventualy won a corner on the right and Webster’s kick was headed by Myles, but the ‘keeper touched it over and the corner came to nothing. Then a cross from Webster on the left was headed over by Reid.

In 64 minutes the Carnoustie defence was caught square with a long ball by B. Smith and ADAMSON slotted past the out-rushing Ferrie from 15 yards.

A minute later Bews was replaced by Narey. Carnoustie were punch drunk now and went further behind in 66 minutes when ADAMSON scored a carbon copy of the previous goal when he threaded the ball past Ferrie this time from the left side.

The home team scored their fifth just 60 seconds later when G. SMITH fired a 30-yard free kick high into the net giving Ferrie no chance.

The visitors got a consolation goal at the end of a hectic three-minute spell when the ball fell kindly to BLACK in a goalmouth scramble and he shot home from close in.

In 70 minutes Smart was booked for dissent. Carnoustie kept trying and a Webster corner was unfortunately headed over by Myles. In 76 minutes Smart was replaced by Allum.

Carnoustie almost scored again when Milne fired in a screamer, but it brought out a great save from the ‘keeper and after Shaw fouled Reid 35 yards out, Black’s kick was blocked by the defensive wall.
