Panmure just edge it in nine-goal thriller

Carnoustie Panmure 5,

Arbroath Vics 4

THE GOWFERS played their second friendly in four days on Tuesday evening when they played host to Arbroath Vics.

Manager Ian Gilzean was rather short-handed, with Steven Cook, Brian Clark, Scott Robertson and Scott Hunter all unavailable, so Steven Narey, Andy Cowan, Josh Perera and Harry Neave were all on from the start. Bench spots went to Marc Scott, Graeme Dailly, trialist Ben Cushnie, trialist ‘keeper Neal Craig and assistant manager Graeme Christie.

The Gowfers kicked off playing towards the town end, but went behind after just two minutes when Narey played a ball across his own box and MOWATT intercepted and hit it into the net.

Two minutes later they went two down when MacPherson brought Lawson down in the box and a penalty was awarded which MOWATT hammered into the back of the net.

The Gowfers nearly pulled one back in 11 minutes when Narey fired in a shot and only a great save by Hutcheson prevented him from scoring. However, two minutes later NEAVE picked up a ball on the edge of the Vics’ box and sent a rocket shot into the net giving the ‘keeper no chance.

The teams were on level terms in 23 minutes when McIlravey sent a great free kick into the Vics’ goalmouth and PERERA rose among a ruck of players to head home.

Ten minutes later Carnoustie went ahead when another good ball was played into the opposition penalty box and again PERERA was there to knock it home at the second attempt.

Just two minutes from the break it was all square again when WALKER fired in a low drive from the edge of the Carnoustie box, which just beat MacPherson at the base of his right-hand post.

Half-time: Carnoustie Panmure 3, Arbroath Vics 3.

In 55 minutes the visitors shocked the home side again when WARREN picked up a loose ball, beat Narey and hit the ball across the ‘keeper’s body into the far corner of the net to put them ahead again.

However, their lead only lasted nine minutes before Neave crossed to DAILLY who brought the sides level again.

Carnoustie then went ahead when Cushnie crossed the ball from the right and COWAN was there to knock it home. This time they managed to hold on to their lead to the end.
