Point for Gowfers

CARNOUSTIE Panmure were back on home turf on Saturday when they played host to Kelty Hearts in the ACA Sports East Super League.

Manager Ian Gilzean fielded the same starting line-up that had beaten Hill of Beath the previous week. For this tie he was much better placed personnel-wise and bench spots went to Steven Narey, John Tonner, Kevin Cumming and back-up keeper Neal Ferrie. Steven Cook is still on the injured list, but is making good progress and should be back in contention very soon.

The visitors kicked off and went on the attack when Smith fed an early ball through to O. McCabe, but his 35-yard effort was wide of McCafferty’s right hand post.

Carnoustie’s Gates made a good burst up the left and fired in a deep cross, but T. Courts was on hand to clear the danger. At the other end, Millar fouled Henderson 25 yards out, but O. McCabe’s kick was blocked by the defensive wall and cleared.

In 24 minutes the Gowfers took the lead. Watson, going through on goal, was pulled down by Duffin and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty which was duly despatched by GATES.

The Fifers stepped up a gear after that setback and forced a corner on the right which Smith took, but Watson was back helping and headed the ball up the park. Meikle then pounced on a loose ball just outside the box, but his effort was easly held by McCafferty.

The homesters finally forced their way into Kelty’s half, but Gates’ cross was too strong for Matthew and went out for a goalkick. Again Kelty pushed the Gowfers back and got a free-kick when Meikle was fouled by Roberts 25 yards out. Smith’s kick got over the wall but was too high and went over the bar. Five minutes before the break Smith, who had fouled Clark 25 yards out, was booked for dissent.

Half-time: Carnoustie Panmure 1, Kelty Hearts 0.

The Fife team immediately went on the attack after the restart and McCafferty had to be careful to guide a deep cross over the by line at his near post.

In 54 minutes the visitors drew level. Carnoustie’s defense was caught napping as Penman fired in a cross from the right which found DUFFIN unmarked and he headed powerfully home from six yards.

A minute later with Carnoustie still reeling , Henderson was pulled down in the box by McCafferty and SMITH made no mistake from the spot.

The homesters then made a change with Cumming replacing Matthew.

Gowfers stepped up the pace and a Gates cross was deflected out for a corner. McIlravey took the flag kick and Robertson was unlucky to head just past. In 65 minutes O. McCabe was replaced by Clark.

Carnoustie kept the pressure up and Watson had a great 25-yard effort well saved by Fleming at his left hand post. In 66 minutes Hendry was booked for a foul on Meikle. Cumming made space down the left and his cross was headed goalwards by Clark, but Fleming streched to turn the ball onto the bar and over.

Clark took the resultant corner and this time PERERA was at the near post to head in the equaiizer on 69 minutes.

In 80 minutes Findlay was replaced by Miniarski. The Gowfers had a good chance to go ahead when Clark fed a ball through to Watson, but he blasted over from the edge of the box.
