ON A day which tested the resolve of the most hardened barbecue enthusiast, one of Dundee and District Youth Football Association’s largest clubs, Ferry Athletic, held their annual awards presentation at Monikie Country Park on Saturday.
In attendance were players, officials and supporters from all age groups, from the youngest 2005s 4x4s, through to elder statesmen under-19s.
Chairman Fergus Middleton said: “We have in previous years been fortunate to just about dodge the soggy Scottish summer weather but this year we were not so lucky!
“As with previous years, the size of the club gives us a dilemma as it is now difficult to get an indoor venue to accommodate players, parents and supporters. Additionally, with difficulties in re-scheduling due to other commitments, we decided to press ahead with the event armed with brollies, donning rainjackets, and winter clothes to celebrate the boys’ success over the past season.”
Despite the poor weather over 200 people attended and the club was grateful to Dundee FC goalkeeper Rab Douglas for giving up his time to present the awards. The boys were delighted.
Fergus continued: “It was great to see trophies adorning the top table with the under-13s winning the Clenaghan League and Dundee West Anniversary Cup in their first competitive season and the under-17s winning their 10th and 11th trophies as a team when securing their fourth consecutive league title as well as the Henry Dolan Cup.”
He concluded: “In addition to our established seven-a-sides and 11-a-sides teams we also have our successful four-a-side teams for age groups 2004 and 2005. We have a great turnout already showing budding talent and, with excellent coaches leading them, the club continues to go from strength to strength.”
