Rose too thorny for the gowfers

Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic 4, Carnoustie Panmure 1.

Last Saturday, Carnoustie Panmure were back on the road with a trip to New Dundas Park to meet Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic in the East Superleague.

For the tie manager Alan McSkimming was again without several key players, with Steven Cook and Garry Kenneth both still injured, Roddy Black suspended and Mark Kohler out due to work commitments.

On the plus side, Liam Scott declared himself fit and was on from the start while Scott Robertson also declared himself ok and took a seat on the bench, where he was joined by Greg Birmingham and spare keeper, Chris Macpherson.

The early stages of the match were fairly even with no real chances at either end, but the Gowfers were dealt a blow after only 15 minutes when Liam Scott suffered a recurrence of his shoulder injury and had to go off, making way for Scott Robertson, making his first appearance since suffering an ankle injury in the very first game of the season.

Five minutes later the homesters took the lead, following a foul on Henderson just outside the box, C. THOMSON took the resultant free-kick and smashed the ball round the wall and past Ferrie into the back of the net.

In 28 minutes, Rose were awarded a corner which was taken by C. Thomson who played the ball, to the back post, to Wilson who headed it down to GRADY who side-footed it home from close in.

At this stage the home side were having the best of it, although the Gowfers did have a half-chance, but Simpson put it narrowly over the top. In 35 Minutes the Gowfers were forced to make another change when G. Thomson picked up an ankle knock and his place was taken by Birmingham.

Five minutes later the Gowfers fell further behind when Grady picked out HENDERSON with a pinpoint cross and the ex-Annan striker, who had just been signed the day before, rose to head it past Ferrie for number three.

Right on the whistle the Gowfers had another half-chance, but Cumming put his drive just wide of Easton’s left-hand upright.

Half-time: Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic 3, Carnoustie 0.

The Gowfers started the second half a bit more positively and in 51 minutes pulled a goal back when CUMMING picked the ball up just inside the Bonnyrigg half, then drove forward, went through between two defenders before firing it, past Easton, into the bottom corner of the net.

The Gowfers continued to play away, but didn’t really put the home side under any great pressure and in 68 minutes the Rose restored their three-goal lead when Henderson picked out Wilson with a great cross and he headed it down to McLEISH who steadied himself the knocked the ball past Ferrie for number four.

The last 20 minutes were played out mainly in mid-field and the home side held out for another comfortable win and a result that sees the Gowfers drop to the bottom of the table.

Carnoustie Panmure: Ferrie, L. Scott, Neath, Millar, Buggins, Roberts, McIlravey, Bews, G. Thomson, Cumming, Simpson. Substitutes – Robertson, Birmingham, Macpherson (GK).

The Gowfers are on the road again, heading this time for Olive Bank Stadium, and a meeting with Musselburgh Athletic in the East Superleague.

Burgh have had a good start to the season with three wins and two draws in their seven games played and currently lie in fourth spot, so this will be another tough tie for the Gowfers. In their last visit to Olive Bank, the Gowfers ended up on the wrong side of a 3-1 scoreline and have in fact won only once in four visits. Kick-off is 2.30 p.m.
