Simpson strike sees off Oakley United

Carnoustie Panmure sealed a place in the Scottish Junior Cup last 16 with a 1-0 win over Oakley United.

Carnoustie started the game well and peppered the home box repeatedly during the first half.

Five minutes in a great pass was played into Gray who slid the ball through to McCabe, but the midfielders shot was deflected clear.

Scott was able to terrorise the Oakley back line throughout and played in a great cross into McCabe five minutes before half time, only for Gowfer’s man to slip as he shot.

Oakley started the second half sharply with three chances in the first 15 minutes but none of these were to trouble Cormack in the Panmure goal.

With 70 minutes on the clock substitute Sam Simpson finally broke the deadlock.

The ball was played out to him wide and he weaved his way into the box, passing three players with ease, before smashing the shot past the helpless Oakley keeper.

Tomorrow, Saturday, the Gowfers are again on Cup duty and again on the road, heading this time for Albyn Park and a meeting with Broxburn Athletic in the second round of the East of Scotland Cup.

The pair also met in this competition last season but it was in the quarter-final stage on April 25 at Laing Park, with the visitors recording a narrow 3-2 win.
