Carnoustie Panmure 0, Hill of Beath Hawthorn 4.
Last Saturday, Carnoustie Panmure were back on home turf, playing host to Fife side Hill of Beath Hawthorn in the Mcbookie.com East Superleague.
For the tie, Manager Alan McSkimming again found himself somewhat short handed as regards players with Scott Robertson and club captain, Steven Cook both injured, Mark Kohler still out due to work commitments, Roddy Black serving the first of a four game suspension and to make matters worsew veteran centre-half, Garry Kenneth pulled a muscle in the pre-match warm-up and was forced to pull out before a ball had been kicked.
Kev Cumming, back from holiday, took over as centre-half and Greg Birmingham, also back from holiday, went straight on to the bench where he was joined by Mike McIlravey, Liam Scott and spare goal keeper, Chris Macpherson.
Before kick-off a minutes silence was observed in memory of Gordon Roger, Forfar West End Secretary, who died suddenly earlier in the week.
The visitors started the stronger and had an early chance, but G. Smith drove his shot high over the bar. They kept pressing however and edged ahead in 20 minutes after Moffat took the ball down the line then sent a cross into the Gowfer’s box. In attempting to clear away, Cumming took a swing at the ball, but missed it completely and it ran through to ANTHONY, who drove it low, past Ferrie, into the back of the net.
In 25 minutes, the visitors were reduced to ten men when Moffat received a straight red card for a terrible tackle on Bews.
The remainder of the half continued with play swinging from end to end with the visitors still having the best of it, but just before the break the Gowfers did have a half-chance when Buggins tried a long-range shot, but fired it wide, past Hall’s right-hand post.
Half-time: Carnoustie Panmure 0, Hill of Beath Hawthorn 1.
From the restart Haws continued to have the best of things and in 55 minutes won a free-kick, about 25 yards out, when Anthony was brought down by Cumming, which resulted in the Carnoustie man being shown a yellow card.
G. SMITH took the kick and curled the ball round the wall, and past Ferrie, to double his side’s advantage. In 67 minutes the Gowfers made a change with McIlravey replacing Thomson.
A minute later, Wright was cautioned for a hand-ball, just outside the box, but the Gowfers couldn’t take advantage of the resultant free-kick and the ball was cleared away to safety by Lee. In 84 minutes the Fifers edged further ahead after a low cross in by G. Smith was missed by the Carnoustie defence and was turned in by ANTHONY for his own second and his side’s third.
Two minutes later the Gowfers had a half-chance, but McIlravey’s shot, from 25 yards, crashed back off the bar and was cleared away upfield by Dair. In 89 minutes Anthony played a good ball into the box to Adamson, who was fouled by Buggins, and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.
ADAMSON took the kick himself and fired the ball home, giving Ferrie no chance. Right on the whistle Roberts was shown a yellow card for a foul on Gemmell and seconds later the referee brought the tie to an end and signalled the end of a miserable afternoon for the Gowfers.
Carnoustie Panmure: Ferrie, Neath, Buggins, Millar, Cumming, Roberts, M. Scott, Bews, Thomson, P. Smith, Simpson. Substitutes – Birmingham, McIlravey, L. Scott, Macpherson (GK).
Tomorrow (Saturday) the Gowfers are back on the road, heading this time for New Dundas Park, to meet Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic in the McBookie.com East Superleague. The Gowfers haven’t won there since March 2006, but with ‘Rose’ not having made the best of starts to the season, with two wins and four defeats in their six games played, Alan McSkimming’s men will be looking to get back on track after last week’s showing and a tough encounter is on the cards. Kick-off will again be at 2.30 p.m.
