MATTHEW IS KING OF THE LINKS
CARNOUSTIE Golf Club member Matthew Southgate, from Thorpe Hall, Essex, won the prestigious St Andrews Links Trophy with a final round 67 over the Old Course on Sunday.
A 72-hole aggregate of 13-under-par 275 saw the 21-year-old Englishman finished five strokes ahead of joint runners-up Philip McLean, from Peterhead, and Walker Cup man Stiggy Hodgson.
Matthew's father, Ian, has over the years been a regular competitor in the Craw's Nest Tassie, hence the family connection with Carnoustie GC.
The duo are both members of the club and have represented Carnoustie in the annual Lindsay Shield matches against St Andrews and Leven Thistle.
Matthew has yet to gain a full England cap. His biggest win prior to the weekend was in his home county, the Essex Open Amateur Championship.
"I couldn't have picked a better place for my biggest win to date," said Matthew, who shared the lead at halfway with Denmark's Daniel Lokke and Ben Westgate, Trevose, on six-under-par 138.
Stiggy Hodgson, Sunningdale, opened up a one shot lead after a third round 67 for 207, but Matthew forged clear of the field with a superb five-under-par final round.
Following his St Andrews triumph, Matthew has been staying in Carnoustie this week at the Camus Street home of local golf official Willie Ramsay and has taken the opportunity to put in several practice rounds over the town's world famous links before heading off this weekend to Muirfield where he will compete next week in the British Amateur Championship.
