Carnoustie Panmure 0, Linlithgow Rose 2

THE GOWFERS played host to top of the table Linlithgow Rose in the McBookie.com East Superleague on Saturday. Manager Ian Gilzean kept faith with the starting 11 which had played so well to get a win the previous week. Bench spots were also the same, except for Danny Millar replacing Findlay.

Linlithgow Rose kicked off and made a bee-line for Carnoustie’s goal when Strickland fed a through ball to Coyne, but Macpherson was out quickly to snatch the ball off his toes.

At the other end McIlravey tried a shot from 30 yards, but it was well held by Hay. Linlithgow went ahead in 11 minutes when a McArthur through ball to STRICKLAND caught the Carnoustie defence square and he chipped the ball over the out-rushing Macpherson and into the empty net.

The Gowfers had a quick chance to level things when Dailly put in a fine cross from the right but the unmarked Deasley headed past the post.

Carnoustie were awarded a free-kick 35 yards out, but Clark’s effort was well over.

Deasley managed to get a shot on target but it was straight at Hay and the Rose ‘keeper had no trouble making the save. The visitors went back on the attack and Strickland laid the ball off to Herd at the corner of the box but the shot was straight at Macpherson.

Carnoustie’s Clark played a good pass through to Deasley but Hay bravely came out to save at his feet, then Young failed to cut out a long ball from Gibson and the ball landed for Coyne, but his effort was again straight at Macpherson.

Half-time: Carnoustie Panmure 0, Linlithgow Rose 1.

Linlithgow made the first move goalwards in the second half, but Coyne’s cross was taken out of the air easily by Macpherson.

In 52 minutes Dailly went off to be replaced by M. Scott. At the other end, Macpherson was called into action to turn a Coyne drive round the post.

Eight minutes later Linlithgow went two up after a snap-shot by Strickland was turned past by Macpherson. From Nelson’s corner STRICKLAND got in a header in at the near post which was cleared out by Young, but the officals decided the ball had crossed the line.

In 64 minutes Young was booked for a foul on McArthur then Deasley was fouled by Ovenstone 25 yards out, but Linlithgow’s defence stood firm and blocked L. Scott’s free kick. A minute later L. Scott was booked for dissent.

Nelson made a great run down the left and fired the ball across the six-yard box, but Coyne just failed to get a touch on it. In 72 minutes Herd was replaced by Roddy McLellan and a minute later the Gowfers made their second change with Cook coming on for Ferguson. Roddy McLellan got into the action quickly and tried a shot from the edge of the box, but it was straight at Macpherson.

In 76 minutes McIlravey was replaced by Neave and three minutes later Smith took over from Strickland for Linlithgow’s second change.

The visitors should have gone further ahead when the ball was crossed from the right and fell to Coyne, on the six yard line but he failed to control it and Macpherson was able to grab the loose ball. In 83 minutes Shirra was booked for a foul on Clark.

Roddy McLellan provided Coyne with a great chance to make it three with a good pass into the box but he hesitated and Young was able to put the ball out for a corner. In 85 minutes Linlithgow replaced Gibson with Wilson. McArthur fed a long pass to Roddy McLellan, but he had strayed offside then Smith had a shot from the edge of the box but it was an easy save for Macpherson.

In the final minute Nelson was booked for a foul on L. Scott. Clark took the resultant free kick, but Hay held it easily.
