ANGUS Council’s sports development team recently hosted three ‘Fun in Athletics’ festivals across Angus in partnership with Angus Active Schools.

Festivals have taken place in Monifieth, Montrose and Forfar with another three planned in Carnoustie, Arbroath and Brechin.

‘Fun in Athletics’ is designed to give children an introduction to athletics through lots of fun track and field events in a team-based environment. And the Angus festivals have seen teams of up to 15 boys and 15 girls in primaries six and seven take part in relay races, javelin, speed bounce, standing long-jump, standing triple-jump and vertical jump events.

Birkhill Primary School, Lochside Primary School, Montrose, and Whitehills Primary School, Forfar, will be joined by the top teams from the second phase of the events and will come together at Lochside Leisure Centre, Forfar, in December to contest the ‘Fun in Athletics’ Angus final.

Sports students from Angus College have been trained to help run the athletics events on the day and senior pupils from Monifieth High School also supported the event at David Lloyd Leisure, Ethiebeaton Park.

Around 420 Angus youngsters have taken part in the three festivals so far with this number set to double.
