Alan shares first prize

IN THE Midland Golfers’ Alliance opening competition of the 2011-12 season at Thornton Golf Club, Fife, on Thursday,Carnoustie’s Alan McEwan, playing off 14, returned a net 67 to share first handicap prize with Gil Muir, Burntisland, (8).

Alan was also one of the first two qualifiers for the McQueen Shield handicap championship to be contested over the Burnside Course, Carnoustie, in April.

There was an even tighter finish in the scratch section where Edzell professional Alastair Webster and three other players tied for first place on one-over-par 71.

Qualifiers for the JTC Interiors Express MGA Championship at Carnoustie in April were J. Stevenson, Braehead, H. Wong, Wellsgreen, P. Brookes, Pitreavie, and A. Webster, Edzell.

McQueen Shield qualifiers were G. Muir, Burntisland, and A. McEwan, Carnoustie.

The next competition is at Blairgowrie (Lansdowne) on Tuesday, August 30, with tee-times from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

In Scotland team

MONIFIETH’S Rebecca Wilson, of Grange Golf Club, has been named in the Scotland team to defend the Women’s Home Internationals title at Hillside Golf Club, Lancashire, from September 7 to 9.

Previously capped at junior level, Rebecca’s selection for the national team follows her victories earlier this season in two SLGA Order-of-Merit events, the Munross Trophy at Montrose and the Mackie Bowl, during which she had a course record 68 over the Gullane No 1 course.

Other players included in the team to be captained by Fiona McKay are Eilidh Briggs, Megan Briggs, both Kilmacolm, Louise Kenney, Pitreavie, Kelsey MacDonald, Nairn Dunbar, Alyson McKechin, Elderslie, Pamela Pretswell, Bothwell Castle, and Jane Turner, Craigielaw.

Ladies’ Open

THE MONIFIETH Ladies’ Open over the Medal Course, originally scheduled for August 11, but postponed due to flooding, has been re-arranged for Thursday, September 8, with tee-times from 10.30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entry fee is £10 and players interested in taking part should contact Pam on 01382 737044.

Jessica is champion

SEVENTEEN-year-old Jessica Meek made the journey north from Carnoustie to Lossiemouth a worthwhile trip when she won the North of Scotland Girls’ Championship over Moray Golf Club’s New Course on Sunday.

Jessica had an excellent score of 71 with birdies at the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 12th and 18th. She showed her long-hitting capabilities by driving the green at the 296 yard closing hole.

Aboyne’s Kimberley Beveridge was runner-up with a 74.

Eleanor Tunn, Reay, had the second best scratch score of 73 but, with a handicap of four, she won the handicap trophy with a net 69.

A total of 15 girls took part.
